Kenya: Tillerson Cancels Day's Events in Nairobi Due to Illness

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in the middle of a week-long trip to Africa, canceled his public schedule in Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday because he was not feeling well, the State Department said.

The news agency quoted the US Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein saying that, "The Secretary is not feeling well after a long couple days working on major issues back home such as North Korea".

A rigorous schedule that included stops in three African countries Friday has been made even more strenuous for Tillerson by events in Washington.

Tillerson's Saturday schedule included an event for PEPFAR, the US government-funded programme to fight HIV/AIDS, a visit to American diplomats at the USA embassy in Nairobi and a wreath-laying ceremony commemorating the 20-year anniversary of the deadly al-Qaeda bombing of U.S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which killed 224 people.

After jetting into the country on Friday, Tillerson met President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi where he assured of his Government's commitment to Kenya on trade and security.

Tillerson is four days into his first diplomatic trip to Africa, where he has visited Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya.

Other officials traveling with Tillerson will attend the Pepfar event, and the State Department is looking at rescheduling the wreath-laying ceremony, Goldstein said.

He plans to send another day in Nairobi before heading to N'Djamena, Chad, and Abuja, Nigeria, on Monday and Tuesday.
