EPL : Southampton sack manager Mauricio Pellegrino

It is believed Southampton aren't set to appoint Hughes imminently, while other candidates such as former Hull City and Watford manager Marco Silva, plus ex-West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, aren't now in the running.

Southampton have sacked manager Mauricio Pellegrino after a run of one Premier League win in 17 games.

Southampton have won only once in their last 17 EPL outings, though the team have qualified for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The Portuguese coach is available, having lost his job back in January, but will no doubt be conscious of a second successive Premier League relegation, having suffered the dreaded drop with Hull last season.

Negotiations on a deal that suits Saints and Hughes are understood to have started, with outgoing manager Pellegrino sending an open letter to fans.

Hughes played for Southampton for nearly two seasons towards the end of his career.

Southampton, who are the ninth Premier League club to change manager this term, are in their sixth straight season in the top flight and have not finished lower than 14th in that time.

"I am really happy with the hospitality of the people of Southampton and the respect you have shown me in every moment during this experience. I have enjoyed an fantastic experience and I know that Southampton has everything required to move forward".

The final straw for the Saints board was the spineless 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday when Pellegrino accused some of his players of giving up.
