Iran, US to hold talks on 2015 nuke deal

Since the 2015 nuclear deal that reintroduced Iran to global oil markets, this is only the second worldwide development deal that has reached fruition.

European Union foreign ministers, who will meet to discuss the issue Monday in Brussels, are expected to affirm that they believe the deal with Iran is good and work to discourage Trump from pulling out of the deal in May.

Iran agreed to curbs on its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of a number of sanctions as part of the deal.

Shamkhani made the remarks as he met today in Tehran with Yusuf bin Alawi, the minister responsible for foreign affairs in Oman, a key Gulf ally of the United States with close ties to Iran.

"We will not accept any changes, any interpretation or new measure aimed at limiting" the 2015 deal between Iran and major powers, said Ali Shamkhani in remarks carried by ISNA news agency.

"There is a lot we agree on and where we disagree we are working to bridge our differences", Hook said.

He declined to indicate what would happen if and when such an agreement is reached, saying: "We are not under instructions from the president to go beyond seeking an agreement with our European allies".

Representatives of Iran and other parties, including the U.S., Britain, Germany, France, China and Russian Federation, launched the latest round of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Vienna on Friday.

Iran, which according to the United Nations atomic watchdog has been abiding by the deal since it came into force in January 2016, has repeatedly ruled out any changes to the agreement.

The talks in Vienna on Friday, a regular review of the accord, involved Iran and the six other signatories.

President Trump has vowed to walk away from the 2015 agreement in mid-May unless European countries join the U.S.in addressing what the president says are its fatal flaws. This week's firing of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and the choice of Iran hard-liner Mike Pompeo to replace him have fueled speculation Washington will pull out.

President Trump has opposed the deal from the start, and is demanding broad changes to the already negotiated pact.
