United jet diverted due to pet on wrong flight

McTavish's allegations came just four days after a 10-month-old French bulldog died on a United flight after a flight attendant urged the owner to store the pooch in an overhead bin.

"I feel devastated. Every night I cry because it feels really empty without him", said Sophia Ceballos, 11, who hasn't been the same since her puppy died. "We provided compensation to all customers on board for the diversion", United Airlines spokesperson Natalie Noonan said in a statement provided to PEOPLE.

This is the third incident involving dogs on United flights this week.

The family of the dog, Kokito, claims that they were told by a flight attendant to put the dog in the overhead bin rather than underneath the seat. Kokito didn't survive the flight. Delta and American airlines each reported two animal deaths, Kennedy said in the letter. The flight attendant allegedly did not hear or understand the family when they said the dog was in the carrier. It would explicitly ban placing pets in overhead bins and ensure reasonable access to food and water, among other measures.
