Red Arrow jet crashes at RAF Valley

The pilot reportedly ejected but their condition is unknown.

A Red Arrows jet has crashed in Wales at an RAF base, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The RAF has launched an investigation, saying it would be inappropriate to comment further.

Based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, all Red Arrows pilots have flown operationally in frontline aircraft before joining the display team. "Then it looked like it was about to land, then next thing I saw was the parachute and then the plane hit the runway and went up in flames".

At RAF Valley on the island of Anglesey, wreckage from the jet could be seen close to the runway.

Sky News Defence Correspondent Alistair Bunkall said it is believed the aircraft was a two person plane.

An air ambulance has been scrambled to RAF Valley to assist the emergency services already on scene.

The 52-year-old said: "I did not see the crash but I heard a very loud noise".

Reading a statement at the RAF base, Group Captain Nick Tucker-Lowe, described the crash as a "tragic accident" and said the families of the engineer and the pilot had been informed.

A jet in Britain's Red Arrows aerobatic team crashed at an airbase in Wales on Tuesday, the Royal Air Force said, but there was no immediate word on the fate of the pilot.

"The pilot of the aircraft survived the incident and is now receiving medical care".

Defence secretary Gavin Williamson added: 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of the RAF engineer at this incredibly sad time'.
