Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai was on Monday elected as the new chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, replacing Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Geelani, 89, however, would continue to be the chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G), as he was elected the lifetime chairman of the separatist coalition when it was founded in 2004. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat is a separatist organisation of Jammu and Kashmir founded on August 7, 2014.

Mohammad Ashraf has been aiding Geelani since a very long time, In November 1986 Mohammad Ashraf Khan, alias Sehrai, was released from Central Jail Jammu after serving one-year detention under Public Safety Act (PSA) for "talking about freedom of Kashmir".

Geelani had cited health reasons as he offered to step down. "So today I willfully step-down from the chairmanship and advise the Shoora to arrange an alternative at the earliest", he said. "I extend my fullest cooperation and honest wishes to the would-be leadership of the organization", Geelani, as per the TeH statement said.

However, in 2010, Jamat-e-Islami (JeI) suspended Geelani from the basic membership of the party over the "adverse" remarks made against his parent outfit in a new controversial biography.

Though reports say that the handing over of the charge was due to the old age of Geelani, some say there may be other factors which may have pushed in the change. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat knows what to do after my death. Geelani parted ways from Hurriyat Conference saying that several leaders of the grouping tacitly supported Assembly elections in 2002. He served at this position for 18 years.
