Sisi re-elected with 97 per cent of votes in Egypt's election

His only rival, leader of the El-Ghad party Moussa Mostafa Moussa, won 2.92% of votes.

President Donald Trump on Monday called Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to congratulate him on winning last week's Egyptian presidential election, according to el-Sisi's office.

Turnout was 41 percent, despite efforts to get as many Egyptians as possible to polling stations during last week's vote.

The number of invalid votes at this year's election was a sharp increase than in past contests, where 4.07 percent of the 2014 election and 3.1 percent of 2012 runoff ballots were invalid.

The election featured only one other candidate - himself an ardent supporter of Mr Sisi - after all serious opposition contenders halted their campaigns in January.

"If I ran in the elections against any other candidate other than President El-Sisi, I would have gotten more votes for certain", Moussa said, stressing that the most important aspect of this election is that all Egyptians served their national duty.

Voter turnout was 41 percent - 6 points lower than in the previous poll - despite the polls being kept open later on the final day.

In a televised address, el-Sissi thanked voters and promised to work for all Egyptians, saying "those who renewed their trust in me and gave me their votes are no different from those who did otherwise".

The victor of the presidential elections will take office on June 8 for the next four years, following the official end of the first term of President Abdel Fattah Sisi on June 7, in accordance with Article 140 of the Egyptian Constitution.

"The entire world heard your chants for the love of Egypt", he said.

Moussa said that the high voting rate for Sisi is the largest piece of evidence on the achievements and awareness of the Egyptian people, who are the first winners.

British foreign minister Boris Johnson appeared to strike a more cautious tone, writing on Twitter: "Look forward to working with President Sisi's government in his 2nd constitutional term".
