Biggest Test win since 1934

Biggest Test win since 1934

This 492-run victory is South Africa's fourth win by over 300 runs since the start of 2017: they won by 340 runs against England, 333 runs against Bangladesh and by 322 runs against Australia in the previous Test. Batting out for a draw would have been the most realistic target to save some pride, but Australia lasted barely an hour and just 16.4 overs of day five at the Wanderers.

"This means a lot to us", South Africa captain Faf du Plessis told reporters.

Against all expectations, he featured in the first game and did reasonably well but a crushing defeat warranted some changes on the part of the hosts, so Morkel was left out in favour of Ngidi, who justified his selection in South Africa's series-equalling win in the second Test. Looking back at his worldwide career, Morkel's said the win that stands out most for him was being a part of the side that famously beat Australia in Australia in 2008-09, in a Test series for the first time since re-admission.

Of course, ever the team man, Morkel was smiling because his side had just recorded their biggest win ever, thrashing their Australian arch-rivals by 492 runs.

AUSTRALIA'S MAN OF THE SERIES: Tim Paine's composure with the bat in all four Tests was impressive, but it's hard to go past Pat Cummins. This group in here had the chance to show some real fight and determination and unfortunately, we weren't able to because I think mentally we weren't quite there. "It will be good for guys to get home, take a deep breath after everything that's happened and, in the next couple of weeks, start to focus on our next series".

Australia were bowled out for 119, losing seven wickets for 31 in a whirlwind collapse.

"It's been a really challenging week but you can't doubt the effort", Paine said in the post-match ceremony. "We nearly went from motivated to motivated/angry to try and turn it around. Since then walking onto the field for South Africa was unbelievable so that was a big turnaround for me in my global career". It was Philander's 200th wicket in his 54th Test.

During the third Test match at Cape Town, captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft were caught red-handed for ball-tampering and subsequently suffered harsh suspensions from Cricket Australia (CA). In the end, it was a run-out, perhaps appropriately effected by Markram, who with 480 was comfortably the leading run-scorer in the series.

"I thought we were going to be better than we were". There was not one day did I not enjoy coming to nets. "I still have a love of the game". "Since then, walking on the field for South Africa every time was unbelievable", ESPNcricinfo quoted Morkel as saying.
