David Warner accepts 12-month ban over ball-tampering scandal

According to recent revelations, some members of Australia's national cricket team cheated in a match against South Africa by tampering with the ball.

"We heard this morning that David Warner had also accepted the sanctions Cricket Australia had put on him, so all three guys have accepted the sanctions".

"The pleasing thing to me is that all this issue is starting to come to an end", he said, referring to Smith and Warner's acceptance of one year bans.

"I would give anything to have this behind me and be back representing my country", Smith said on his verified Twitter account. At the end of the day, as a former player and former captain, I must say I was quite shocked to see what actually took place on the field.

Writing on Twitter he added: "I won't be challenging the sanctions".

Smith and Bancroft confirmed on Wednesday that they had accepted the Cricket Australia (CA) sanctions.

"I have today let Cricket Australia know that I fully accept the sanctions imposed on me", wrote Warner. When I was back home about one and a half weeks ago-if you think it was big out here-it was an astronomical issue in Australia. "Thank you to all those who have sent messages of support", Bancroft tweeted.

While refusing to be drawn into whether the bans handed out by Cricket Australia were too harsh, Ponting said that in some ways their hands had also been forced by the collective reaction to the scandal.

The alleged attempts to cheat included team Australia's captain Steve Smith, who's admitted to "orchestrating a plan to tamper with the ball", according to multiple media reports. "We have lost something in the spirit of the game and determination to be the best", he said.

Warner on Thursday joined sacked skipper Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft in accepting the suspensions handed to them for bringing the game into disrepute during the Cape Town Test.

The players have until today to appeal their bans with Warner the only player left to announce his decision. "The informed conclusion is that, as right as the motivation is, the proposed penalties are disproportionate relative to precedent".

"We ask consideration be given to recalibrating the proposed sanctions, to consider options such as suspending or reducing part of the sanction, to considering allowing players to return to domestic cricket earlier as an important part of their rehabilitation".

Judging by the flurry of ball-tampering questions towards Ricky Ponting as soon as the floor was declared open for queries, it was hard to believe the press conference was for the Delhi Daredevils.
