Meeting With Kim Jong Un To Take Place in May or June

US President Donald Trump has said that he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in May or early June.

North Korea has not broken its public silence on the proposed Trump-Kim summit, which USA officials say is being planned for May.

But the North remained publicly silent for weeks after its leader's invitation to talks was first delivered to Trump by South Korean officials.

The North's official media has thus far made virtually no mention of the diplomatic gestures Kim has made towards Seoul and Washington since January, though it did report Kim's visit to Beijing last month to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Kim's remarks on Monday break that public silence, although he did not specifically refer to a summit with Trump.

The Korean Times' report of the dinner speculates that Mr Chung felt comfortable asking the question because in Korea, age is still taken much like rank - the the older the person, the more senior they are.

The meeting of the Political Bureau of the C.C. came two days ahead of the Sixth Session of the 13th Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK, slated to take place on Wednesday.

"Kim Jong Un chose to go to the negotiating table because he judged that once he became a nuclear power", he said, "the USA would be much more interested in talking to him".

White House officials have said North Korea must commit to dismantling its nuclear program and ending weapons testing in order for talks to be productive. Prior to that, Washington had relied mostly on South Korea's assurances of Kim's intentions.

"And I think there'll be great respect paid by both parties and hopefully we'll be able to make a deal on the de-nuking of North Korea", the President said.

But the talk of phased and synchronized measures triggered concerns that it may herald a setback to the implementation of a potential package deal, which is sought by the US and South Korea, given the secretive regime's track record of reneging on previous agreements that followed a "word-for-word" and "action-for-action" approach.

No specifics have yet emerged concerning the date or venue of the proposed summit, with a third country such as Mongolia or Sweden under consideration to host the talks, according to multiple reports.
