Wednesday morning school bus crash injures one in downtown Atlanta

At least 30 people, including 27 school children, were killed after a private bus skidded off the road and rolled down deep into a gorge in Nurpur area of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh on Monday. The driver Madan Lal, was also killed in the accident but a case has been registered against him for rash driving and causing death by negligence.

The bus carrying young students home in Himachal Pradesh state flew off a cliff near Nurpur, about 325 kilometers (200 miles) from the state capital Shimla, and crashed into a valley.

The adult dead included two teachers and the driver.

Several students are reportedly fighting for their lives in nearby hospitals.

According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location".

The state government has announced $7,700 (500,000 Indian rupees) in compensation for each victim's family.

According to media, 10 children were hospitalized.

India's roads, particularly in the hills, have always been feared for their deep potholes, reckless drivers and, very often, a lack of guardrails. Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, Union minister JP Nadda, Transport minister Thakur, were among those who expressed deep shock over the tragedy.

In India, road accidents kill about 150,000 people a year, the largest toll in the world. "My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident", tweeted PMO India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was anguished by the loss of lives in the latest incident.
