Yvonne Staples, Member and Manager of the Staple Singers, Dies at 80

ALL ACCESS extends condolences to friends and family of YVONNE STAPLES of THE STAPLES SINGERS, she passed away in her hometown of CHICAGO, reports the CHICAGO-SUN TIMES.

Yvonne's sister, Cleotha, the oldest of the Staples siblings, died in 2013 after a 12-year battle with Alzheimer's. It was also during this time that Yvonne became a permanent part of the group, after having previously filled in for Pervis while he was in the service.

The group took their gospel roots and combined that with soul, funk, blues, and pop to create their sound.

The group had a string of hits including "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There".

Her father formed the Staple Singers with his children Pervis, Mavis and Cleotha in 1948.

Rest in peace, Yvonne. "If that's what the contract talked about, that's what you greater do". Mavis once credited Yvonne for restarting her career after the death of their father in 2000 left her depressed and unmotivated.

"Pressure? I didn't feel any pressure", she said in an interview.

The gospel group exploded onto the scene in 1957 with its first hit, "Uncloudy Day", and would later become an important mainstay of Memphis's Stax Records, recording several Top 40 hits there in the late 1960s. "Yvonne said, 'Mavis, your daddy would want you to keep singing". "She was a reluctant singer, but she knew Mavis needed her, so she sang with her every night onstage". You've got to get up.

Roebuck "Pops" Staples brought his family from MS to Chicago so that he could work in the steel and meat industries. "It woke me up". In many ways, the sparse instrumentation and backing harmonies in Mavis Staples' recordings and concerts the last decade echoed the arrangements that she had known from an early age with the Staple Singers. "She said 'Mavis is the star".
