Telsa fans successfully crowdfund a replacement couch for billionaire Elon Musk

Based on that result, Tesla said it expects Model 3 production to "climb rapidly" over the next three months.

Tesla's previous goal has been to reach a 5,000-a-week production target for the Model 3, but Musk indicates he wants to reach 6,000 per week by the end of June.

Either way, Tesla has orders for an estimated 400,000 Model 3s from customers who can't take delivery, because their cars haven't been built.

The Model 3 is key to Tesla's efforts to generate enough revenue to pay off investors and increase development of other electric vehicles.

Tesla had been under the pressure to prove to the Critics and investors that the company can increase the production of the electric mass market vehicle with $35,000 starting price.

In an interview with CBS News last week, Musk mentioned the couch in his office at Tesla is, well, "not a good couch".

Yesterday, it was reported that Tesla will shut down Model 3 production this week in order to prepare the assembly line for a big ramp in output. "This means that we will be adding another shift to general assembly, body and paint", Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote in the email obtained by Electrek.

"Please note that all areas of Tesla and our suppliers will be required to demonstrate a Model 3 capacity of ~6000/week by building 850 sets of auto parts in 24 hours no later than June 30th", Musk wrote in the email obtained by Jalopnik, adding that all Model 3 production at Fremont will move to 24/7 operations.

Referring to the strenuous work as "production hell", he has even admitted to sleeping on a couch in a conference room at his Tesla factory in Fremont, California. For starters, Model 3 production (before the shutdown) stood at around 2,000 units per week earlier this month. However, a letter sent by Elon Musk to employees reveals the real reason for the pause in production: Tesla is upgrading the plant for round the clock production from next week.
