Sharp Objects trailer: Amy Adams solves a murder in this HBO miniseries

Based on the novel by Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn, this new series looks every bit as insane and surreal as you would expect from such a twisted but superbly "sharp" mind. Here's everything we know about it so far.

Sharp Objects will premiere in July 2018. And Sharp Objects promises to be equally unsettling, telling the story of a reporter who returns to her small hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. Her mother throws a dish towel with gusto and serves very dramatic face at a funeral. If you want to create an engaging series, you can do little wrong when you get the always remarkable Amy Adams to play the lead as the actress can portray just about every type of emotion out there.

The moody teaser doesn't give away too much, but it does bear all the trademarks of Vallée's dreamlike, brooding aesthetic.

The chilling trailer ends with a child whispering, "It's not safe for you here", as Camille emerges out of a bathtub, gasping for air.

Flynn, author of the best-selling Gone Girl and mystery thriller Dark Places, has a penchant for exploring the tragic tales of loathsome, challenging - on the surface, at least - women in her stories. It also stars Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins and Matt Craven, and all 8 episodes are directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who handled season 1 of Big Little Lies.

The trailer looks as dark and brooding as one would expect given the source material, but it also looks like an outstanding showcase for Adams. This new HBO adaptation looks both stunning and disturbing, and really, what more do you need?
