Meanwhile, chief minister Adityanath rushed to Kushinagar for on-the-spot assessment of accident site. Adityanath climbed atop his vehicle and tried to pacify the crowd with a megaphone, saying, "Narebazi band karo, nautanki band karo (stop raising slogans, stop this drama)". "Nautanki band karein aaplog [Stop this drama]", he said. "My thoughts are with families of the deceased and I pray for the early recovery of the injured", Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said in a statement.

Lohani said that in the long term, the solution was the replacement of all unmanned crossings in the huge railway network with bridges or tunnels for roads. I have come here to express my sympathies."However, the protesters squatted on the railway track and demanded that railway personnel be posted at the unmanned crossing to avoid such accidents".

The students, all aged below 10, were being driven to class after the van had picked them up from several villages, when a passenger train collided with their vehicle at a railway crossing. The train was travelling from Siwan in Bihar to Gorakhpur.
