He also said the time when Iran's enemies could "hit and run" was over. "They know that if they get into a military conflict with Iran, they will be struck multiple times over".

He said Washington is in no position to talk about Iran's defence capabilities.

The Iranian diplomat went on to dismiss as "repetitive and unfounded" Pompeo's remarks about Iran's presence and role in some regional countries, adding "the advisory role of Iran in the two neighboring countries is in accordance with the request of the legitimate governments of those countries and in line with fighting terrorism in the region".

His words came after Syrian Army bases were hit in an alleged missile attack. Iran has expanded its footprint across the region in recent years by backing Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and an array of armed groups.

Israel has not commented on the strikes.

But if they decide to stand against Iran, they will certainly suffer defeat, the Iranian leader added.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are longtime regional rivals, and back opposing sides in the civil wars in Syria and Yemen.

Khamenei further argued that wherever the United States entered, it created instability, bringing misery to people. "Why don't you agitate the Zionists?"

Iran has repeatedly warned the USA to not pull out of the nuclear deal. If Trump reneges on the deal and reapplies the sanctions lifted in exchange for Iran reducing its nuclear program, the United States would once again apply sanctions against many foreign companies doing business with Iran since the deal took effect.
