Gone With the Windrush in Britain

Gone With the Windrush in Britain

The government has been struggling to explain why some descendants of the "Windrush generation", invited to Britain to plug labour shortfalls between 1948 and 1971, have been denied basic rights and have been incorrectly labelled as illegal immigrants.

May and Rudd apologised for the treatment of the Windrush generation during the recent Commonwealth summit attended by leaders from Caribbean countries, among others.

"I think for anyone to see their child grow and become Home Secretary, all parents would be really pleased with that".

While she maintained she was unaware of such measures, there was mounting evidence that targets did exist and were known about within her department, making her position increasingly untenable.

Javid - who backed the Remain campaign, but has since said his "heart" was for Brexit and spoken out against customs union membership - will immediately be tasked with sorting out the Windrush scandal, ensuring that migrants are able to obtain their United Kingdom citizenship as well as establishing a compensation scheme for those who have been affected.

He added more than 500 appointments have been scheduled and more than 100 cases have been successfully resolved.

Mr Javid will now have responsibility for planning for the post-Brexit immigration policy while Brexiteers are demanding that no concessions be made or advantages given to European Union citizens.

Jeremy Corbyn insisted Mrs May had "questions to answer" about her time in the Home Office.

Labour's Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said: "The change in Home Secretary will mean nothing unless Theresa May's "hostile environment" policy is finally brought to an end". "It is a phrase that is unhelpful and doesn't represent our values as a country".

Mr Javid is the first BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) politician to hold the role, previously holding roles as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Minister for Equalities and Financial Secretary to the Treasury.

Amber Rudd resigned Sunday night as home secretary in the wake of Windrush immigration scandal.

In her resignation letter, as you know, she told the Prime Minister she felt she had to quit because she had "inadvertently misled" MPs on the home affairs select committee by saying there are no targets for the expulsion of illegal immigrants.

Former UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd stepped down on Monday amid Windrush scandal concerning the mistreatment of long-term UK residents.

May said she accepted that Rudd had spoken "in good faith" and was sorry to see her resign.

Mrs May's spokesman also stressed the PM, while at the Home Office was aware of deportation targets, which were part of a "performance matrix", but once she "ceased to be Home Secretary, she would not have received any operational detail of that kind". "We have created a system where anybody who looks "different" is treated like a criminal, and diversity is a target for removal".
