The New York Knicks are prepared to open salary-cap space this offseason in the unlikely event they get an inkling LeBron James has some interest, according to a source.

David Fizdale during his spell as Memphis Grizzlies head coach watches his team against the Denver Nuggets at the Pepsi Center on February 26, 2017 in Denver.

Fizdale is New York's 11th head coach since the 2001-02 season, and the fifth since the start of the 2010-11 season.

While the front office members aren't exactly holding their breaths, there's a sense of cautious optimism that Fizdale could appeal to one of the superstars he's built a relationship with.

According to Bobby Marks, the former Nets capologist who now works for ESPN, if all three of those things occur, the Knicks would stand $30 million under the salary cap - enough to afford James.

The contract is for 4 years.

It's reported that NY will hold a news conference to present Fizdale as new coach to media early next week. In 2016, he was named head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies where he made the playoffs in his first season. He was sacked by the Grizzlies on November 27 after a slow start to the season.

The 43-year-old has been working in the National Basketball Association since 2003, mostly as an assistant with the Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. With a lottery pick this year and if Porzingis miss next season, all indications would point towards the Knicks to return to the lottery next year.

His firing didn't put teams off, however, as he was one of the most sought-after names on the market.

Fizdale will aim to break that tradition.
