Trump defends United States gun laws, brands London a knife crime war zone

Defending the use of guns, the U.S. president said: "Yes that's right, they don't have guns they have knives".

"Happy to invite Mr Trump to my (prestigious) hospital to meet with our mayor and police commissioner to discuss our successes in violence reduction in London", he wrote.

President Donald Trump told the NRA convention on Friday that knife crime in London has gotten so bar, one hospital was like "war zone." "They have knives and instead there's blood all over the floors of this hospital", Trump raved.

It is believed Trump was referencing a comment made by Dr Griffiths during a BBC Radio interview earlier this year.

Griffiths, who works at the Royal London Hospital, said that "some of my military colleagues have described their practice here as being similar to being at Bastion", the former British airbase in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

"There is more we can all do to combat this violence, but to suggest guns are part of the solution is ridiculous", Brohi said. "Gunshot wounds are at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more hard to fix", Brohi said in the statement on Saturday.

France's Foreign Ministry said: "France expresses its firm disapproval of the comments by President Trump about the attacks of November 13, 2015 in Paris and asks for respect of the memory of the victims".

"Yes, London has a huge problem with knife crime, but it doesn't compare to what's going on with guns in the United States of America".

London's Metropolitan Police said last month that it's investigating the cause of the increase in murders, but said the city remains among the safest in the world.

"Nobody has guns in Paris and we all remember more than 130 people, plus tremendous numbers of people that were horribly, horribly wounded".

Knife-related crimes rose by 23 percent in London last year and a spate of stabbings and shootings have left more than 50 people dead this year.

In a tweet, shadow home secretary Diane Abbott said she could "hardly see how violent crime in London justifies the licensing of guns in the US". The president has previously criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan over his handling of terror attacks and also been criticized for re-tweeting posts by far-right group Britain First.

The US ambassador to Britain, Woody Johnson, said Mr Trump would "definitely" be coming to London, despite the warnings of likely demonstrations.

Of course that's not true but that did not stop the US President from telling a pro-gun rally that it was.

It was Mr Trump's fourth address to the NRA and his second in office.
