DHS Ends Temporary Protected Status For 50000 Hondurans

The Honduras decision was postponed six months from last fall, when then-acting Secretary Elaine Duke said she couldn't reach a decision on the country and extended the status for more time to deliberate.

It is the latest in a series of decisions by President Donald Trump to shut down temporary protected status (TPS) granted to immigrants after natural disasters or violent conflicts that would prevent them from safely returning to their home countries.

A few days before that announcement, the Trump Administration had said that it would end the TPS program for thousands of Nicaraguans.

It's imperative that Congress create a pathway to lawful permanent residency for Honduras TPS holders as well as the other populations, including Salvadorans, whose protections have been revoked or denied. El Salvador has the second highest. It did the same in November for about 46,000 Haitians.

Catholic Legal Immigration officials have been urging the Trump administration to grant an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status to Hondurans based on the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

If the Honduran designation is terminated, the Trump administration will have canceled protections for about 315,000 foreign citizens. The administration can only extend a TPS designation for 6 to 18 months at a time, meaning that people granted this status often live their lives on hold.

In the statement, Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said the living conditions in Honduras are now at a point where that status isn't needed anymore.

But both countries face ongoing problems, as do some of the others whose nationals are losing their protections.

The largest category, from El Salvador, was stripped of protections in January, when 200,000 migrants were notified they'd need to go home by September of 2019. "It unmasked the reality of the country ― our institutions are broken and the president, because of the elections, has no legitimacy".

"The hurricane was a generation ago, and Honduras long ago reverted to its regular messed-up state, not the special post-hurricane messed-up state required by the TPS statute", said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies. Several groups are suing to stay in the U.S.

The department said Hondurans with temporary protected status will need to re-register for the designation so they can work in the USA until the 2020 deadline. His family overstayed their visas to continue his treatment, and later received TPS.

GONZALES: And that's what 55-year-old Orlando Lopez fears.

"There's really no words", he told HuffPost after hearing the news that TPS would be terminated.

Mr. Trump, his opponents argue, is effectively adding tens if not hundreds of thousands of people to the ranks of those in the US without legal status.

The Trump administration is expected to end special immigration status granted to almost 60,000 Hondurans after a devastating hurricane two decades ago.

Critics have accused the administration of pre-deciding to end the status regardless of the unsafe conditions that persist in the home countries and in some cases over the objections of those countries' governments.
