Android Things 1.0 is ready for consumer devices

Google's annual developer conference "Google I/O 2018" will take place at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California starting Tuesday, May 8. Expect lots of cutting edge stuff on the subject that will cross each of Google's various platforms. Then, the Link Bar will act much like a Google Home smart speaker, it appears. As we saw at I/O past year, Google is working with specific vehicle brands to integrate the best of Android Auto into the native interface for some cars, meaning those cars essentially run on Android, but without needing your phone to work.

Use of the Android Things Console for software updates is limited to 100 active devices for non-commercial use.

The platform could bring its Google Assistant virtual helper to refrigerators and robots and familiar designs to cash registers and vending machines. It also won't require owning an Android phone to use. We should hear more about it during the I/O keynote. Today's announcement is an important step in fully realizing Android in the auto and hopefully modernizing an area where cars haven't particularly been well liked. The JBL Link Bar features seamless HDMI input switching and the Google Assistant can also be used when the TV is off.

Google today announced the launch of Android Things 1.0, its Internet of Things platform. We have seen that till now, Google had nothing interesting to offer in this segment.

Now that we know Android Wear isn't dead, maybe Google's watch project has some life, too. Four times as many smart TV shipments previous year had Samsung's operating system as Android TV, according to IHS Markit.

While the first stable build of the platform packs a number of improvements and tweaks outlined below, its overall objective remains unchanged, with Google still pitching it as the ultimate solution for IoT manufacturers interested in cutting software development, maintenance, and general deployment costs, thus being able to commit more resources to other aspects of their products such as hardware and marketing or simply increase profit margins. Likely the first among many tantalizing announcements, both Google and JBL have partnered to create the first hybrid Assistant/Android TV device, the Link Bar. It will be based on Android Oreo ecosystem for the apps with a redesigned home screen.
