Israel Launches Major Airstrikes Against Iranian Forces In Syria

None of them hit Israel.

In a statement published Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said he would embark on a round of global diplomacy to try and save the deal. "The Syrian army's general command is prepared and ready to deal with every strike in full force".

Iranian state television broke its silence over the Israeli airstrikes late Thursday morning, the start of the Iranian weekend.

"But we did say after the (Western) strikes (on Syria) that of course Russian Federation reserved the right to do anything it considered necessary".

Analysts believe that tensions between Syria and Iran were further stoked after United States President Donald Trump announced recently that he would pull the US out of its nuclear accord with Iran.

The Syrian military acknowledged that the strikes destroyed a radar station and an ammunition warehouse, and damaged a number of air defense units.

An image grab from a video broadcast on May 10 by Syria's official TV allegedly shows Syrian air defense systems intercepting Israeli missiles over Syrian airspace.

The 2015 deal in any case permitted Iran to retain all the components of its nuclear weapons program - uranium enrichment, thousands of centrifuges, its Arak plutonium facility, and its Fordow underground nuclear facility - while shredding the worldwide sanctions regime on Tehran and infusing its economy with hundreds of billions of dollars in unfrozen assets and sanctions relief. Within Iran, it could empower hardliners while weakening the moderate camp that has sought better relations with the West.

"We hit almost all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria", said Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

"The point will come with these actions where the Iranians will say, 'We have to push back forcefully, we have to establish deterrence against the Israelis if we want to stay in Syria, '" said Wimmen. "They should understand that if we get rain, they will get a flood".

- Rania Khalek (@RaniaKhalek) May 9, 2018 So I guess all the major western media outlets are going to push the Israeli line about iran firing at Israel without first verifying?? Israel carried out the raids after it said around 20 rockets, either Fajr or Grad type, were fired from Syria at its forces in the occupied Golan Heights at around midnight. One is that the Syrian government, threatened with the prospect of a regime-shaking Israeli attack, has an incentive to try to restrain Iran's activities. A British-based human rights monitor said 23 fighters were killed. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility.

France urged Iran on Thursday to refrain from all "military provocation" and cautioned it against "all temptations for regional hegemony".

But the chairman of Iran's parliamentary committee on foreign affairs condemned Israel for carrying out the strikes in Syria.

If so, the likelihood that the Iranian-Israeli confrontation will escalate increases.
