USA diplomat involved in hit-and-run case barred from leaving Pakistan

The Pakistani authorities are claiming that they have stopped a U.S. diplomat to fly out of the country in a Bagram-bound plane, it has been reported.

Pakistan and the United States had announced restrictions on diplomats after a U.S. embassy vehicle driven by Colonel Joseph Emanual Hall, defense and air attache of the USA embassy in Islamabad, killed a Pakistani motorcyclist in Islamabad on April 7.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Tensions between the USA and Pakistan have been rising over the fatal accident, which infuriated many Pakistanis and has resulted in the two countries restricting the movement of each other's remaining diplomats, Reuters reported.

Hall is accused of running a red light and killing Ateeq Baig on April 7.

According to the United States decision, Pakistani diplomats, at the embassy in Washington and four consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Texas and Chicago, will need to stay within 25 miles (40-kms) of the city of their posting.

The development came a day after the Islamabad high court passed a judgement that the USA diplomat did not enjoy absolute immunity.

Pakistani authorities have imposed "reciprocal" restrictions on the movement of US diplomats in the country after Washington took similar measures.

According to details, a special aircraft arrived at the Nur Khan Airbase here to take the American diplomat home.

His father had approached the Islamabad High Court to stop the diplomat from leaving the country.

The US representatives waited for four hours at the Pakistani airbase but the FIA officials did not allow Hall to leave the country as his name was put on the blacklist by the Ministry of Interior. But Washington has long believed it actually shelters the Taliban's leaders, and President Donald Trump has cut off military aid in an effort to pressure Pakistan.

The U.S. State Department on Saturday confirmed the new restrictions on its employees in Pakistan but declined further comment.
