Was Pennington done wrong by her corner?

Amanda Nunes spoke following her win over Raquel Pennington at UFC 224 on Saturday night.

"The Lioness" was able to utilize some heavy low kicks throughout the course of the fight to soften up "Rocky".

Pennington did her best and hung in there for over four rounds against Nunes, who otherwise dominated the challenger and bloodied up her face. "Change your mindset", was the advice she got back from a coach, identified by multiple outlets as Jason Kutz.

The corner of Pennington drew criticism for sending out the fighter out against Nunes in the fifth round, even though Pennington said she was done after the fourth round.

She's engaged to Tecia Torres, who used to train with Nunes.

Despite the damage Pennington accrued as well as her telling her cornermen that she was done, it was the referee who ultimately saved Pennington from more needless damage, ubt not before she absorbed a ton of just that.

"It's sad because you could avoid something", she says. She went to the hospital. It might be a bad injury. But to say, "If a fighter tells a corner they're done, that corner should never, under any circumstances, encourage them to continue", is something I don't agree with.

"If she didn't have the right conditioning to fight then the coach should have thrown in the towel for sure", Nunes said through an interpreter, according to the website MMAJunkie. And I would have done the same thing because sometimes when you're exhausted and you don't think you have enough left, your coach's job is to pull the most out of you.

"I respect this woman so much", the Brazilian said with tears in her eyes after her victory. And in my mind, it comes down to two answers. It's very improbable, but stranger things have happened.

And second, fighting on eliminates the chance for regret. You would hope her corner has better insight into that question than any of us.

Pennington ventured back into the Octagon, even as she appeared to have suffered a broken nose.

Moments later, Nunes pummeled Pennington into submission to successfully defend her title in front of her home nation's fans in Rio de Janeiro.
