Wayne Rooney may be asked to stay at Everton

"My understanding of the situation is there seems to have been some negotiation somewhere along the line".

Everton striker Theo Walcott says team-mate Wayne Rooney has nothing to prove amid speculation he is set to leave the club for a move to the United States.

"We need another goalscorer who can score 15 goals or more in the Premier League next year".

But 12 months on he may face more embarrassing questions about his nightwear if his decision to agree a "deal in principle" with DC United leads to a move to the MLS.

'Only after I've spoken him today will I find out where the situation actually lies.

"If the player wants to go - if any player wants to leave - then I'm comfortable with that", Allardyce said.

Everton have invited Wayne Rooney's representatives for disaster talks over the previous England captain's future.

When first asked about the deal, Olson told reporters in the USA: "I don't know what you're talking about".

"He's (Rooney's) had a hard time since last summer but we've all come through that, Wayne included".

He rejoined Everton in July 2017 and scored 11 goals before Christmas but has not been an automatic pick for Allardyce in recent weeks.

There had been suggestions Rooney had demanded the guarantee of regular football next season, but Allardyce rubbished that idea.

In this picture, Wayne Rooney of Everton reacts during the Premier League match between Everton and Newcastle United at Goodison Park on April 23, 2018, in Liverpool, England. "The next level of recruitment has to be quality players who get into the team and make them better than they are at this moment in time".

Allardyce muttered darkly about not being able to play him alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson, Everton's other marquee summer signing, while at the same time complaining that Rooney did not get into the box enough. "He isn't anxious about the money, he just wants to play football".

"I have a contract - a one-year contract". Fair play to him, he could probably have stayed at Man Utd and drifted in and out but he's gone back to his boyhood club.
