USA net neutrality bill gets enough Senate votes to advance

The Congressional Review Act resolution to restore net neutrality rules, which were reversed by the FCC past year, will be brought to the Senate floor on Wednesday.

The repeal takes effect June 11. And the high-profile vote could shine a spotlight on lawmakers running for reelection during a tough midterm season.

Senate Democrats, led by Sen.

"Net neutrality" doesn't make for catchy campaign slogans, but there are indicators that voters are clocking this issue. In order for House Democrats to use the Congressional Review Act, they must collect signatures from a full majority of the House - the Senate only required 30 signatures - just to bring the issue up for vote.

While Collins' support had been public leading up to the vote, Murkowski's and Kennedy's "yes" vote came as a surprise to some. "A vote against this resolution will be a vote to protect large corporations and special interests, leaving the American public to pay the price".

"Moreover, contrary to the scare tactics employed by Senate Democrats, which earned three Pinocchios from the WASHINGTON POSTs fact-checker, our light-touch approach will deliver better, faster, and cheaper Internet access and more broadband competition to the American people - something that millions of consumers desperately want and something that should be a top priority". "I don't know how that animates people to vote if their Netflix is working", he told Reuters.

Still, it is unclear what fate may await the measure in the House. Charles Schumer (D-NY) said before the official vote.

However, the measure is unlikely to pass in the U.S. House and even if it were would have to be approved by President Trump. "Speaker Ryan should listen". Passage of the resolution by the Senate and the House would offer a chance to void the Republican-controlled FCC's 3-2 vote.

As for the possibility of the CRA reaching Trump's desk, Markey said last week during a press conference that the "political firestorm" that would be created by killing an effort to save net neutrality could push the president into signing it.

AT&T said Wednesday it backs an open internet and "actual bipartisan legislation that applies to all internet companies and guarantees neutrality, transparency, openness, non-discrimination and privacy protections for all internet users". The company voiced concerns over the FCC's decision to end "net neutrality" rules. The CRA resolution would nullify the FCC's December 2017 vote.

The FCC's move stirred opposition in Congress and in statehouses.

The Internet Association, a trade group backed by Facebook, Uber and others, has said that regulations targeting Silicon Valley on hate speech risks running afoul of the First Amendment.

Thune urged Democrats to work with him on a plan that he said would incorporate the net neutrality principles they desire without onerous regulation that he said made it harder to connect more Americans to the internet and to upgrade service.

"This isn't about serious legislating", said Sen.
