Vladimir Putin opens controversial Russia-Crimea bridge

With 19 kilometers (11.8 miles) in length, the Crimean Bridge is the longest one in Russian Federation.

The 19-kilometre bridge, which took two years to build and cost $US3.6 billion is Putin's project to show that Crimea has joined Russian Federation for good.

Like many key moments of Putin's presidency, it was a made-for-TV event created to showcase his resolve and authority. In a separate written statement, she pointed out that Washington condemns the construction and partial opening of the Crimean Bridge, which was done without the Ukrainian government's authorization.

Putin, who was re-elected for a fourth Kremlin term in March extending his long rule, pledged to build more of "such projects" across Russian Federation.

Crimea was annexed from Ukraine following the 2014 Ukrainian revolution and takeover of the area by pro-Russian separatists and armed forces.

"Russia's construction of the bridge serves as a reminder of Russia's ongoing willingness to flout worldwide law", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said, Agence France-Presse reported.

Putin, dressed in blue jeans, drove an orange heavy KAMAZ truck on the auto section of the road-and-rail bridge as part of the ceremony.

Ukraine and the European Union slammed the bridge opening as illegal.

"Russia's construction of the bridge serves as a reminder of Russia's ongoing willingness to flout worldwide law", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. The Treasury Department says Arkady Rotenberg and his brother Boris have been some of the primary beneficiaries of their closeness to Putin, receiving around $7 billion in contracts for the Sochi Winter Olympics, another prestige project for the Russian President. "Tomorrow I am ceremonially opening the bridge with the builders and the president". When opened for traffic on Wednesday, it will be able to carry up to 40,000 cars per day on four lanes. The West responded swiftly with crippling economic sanctions.

But it's also a symbol of Russia's worldwide isolation.

In 2016, the USA imposed sanctions on Russian companies that were helping to build the bridge across the Kerch strait. "Russia's construction of the bridge serves as a reminder of Russia's ongoing willingness to flout global law", Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Heather Nauert said at a briefing in Washington, D.C., on May 15.

Putin thanked the organizers of the project, who put the interests of the state over those of particular groups, the sappers, ecologists, scientists and other sectors involved. They made us more attentive and thoughtful.

"Putin initiated this project himself".

Putin highlighted the achievement when he visited the site in March and hailed the "mighty" bridge.

"We'll try", the worker said. "We will make our peoples' lives better and more comfortable", Putin said. In fact, the whole country worked on this bridge. The World Bank ranks the quality of Russia's trade and transport infrastructure as 94th-best in the world, just behind Tunisia and ahead of Colombia. Similarly, the attendance of French officials at the inauguration ceremony is a personal initiative that we regret; it is contrary to global law and the French authorities are not responsible for it.
