Interview Magazine, founded by Andy Warhol, shuts down

Interview, the celebrity interview magazine co-founded in 1969 by gay pop-artist Andy Warhol, officially shut down today after facing two unresolved lawsuits from former executives who claimed the magazine stiffed them for vast sums.

Interview had gone through several overhauls since its birth, with the most drastic shift happening after Warhol's death in 1987.

Interview's former editorial director of almost ten years, Fabien Baron, who resigned in April, filed a lawsuit against the magazine in the beginning of May along with his wife, the stylist Ludivine Poiblanc.

Interview magazine has ceased publishing with immediate effect and closed their NY office.

Interview Magazine, the fabled publication originally founded by Andy Warhol, is closing up shop.

Fabien Baron, who left interview as editorial director in April due to lack of payment after a decade as editorial director, said he's "saddened and surprised by the news that Brant Publications has chosen to shutter the cultural icon that Interview has been since its founding".

But Baron now claims the company stiffed him on over $500,000 in invoices over the last three years.

In 1977, riffing on his famous dictum that in the future everyone in America would be famous for 15 minutes, Warhol told the late writer and editor Glenn O'Brien that when he was drunk, "I tell everyone they can be on the cover of Interview".

The publication, which was launched in 1969, has reportedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which entails the liquidating of assets. Dan Ragone, who was Interview's president for six years, also sued in 2016 for allegedly unpaid wages of about $170,000 and that case is still working its way through the courts.

"Interview was an incredible place to work and I feel lucky to have gotten the chance to take part in Andy Warhol's legacy in some small way", Ezra Marcus, who was the publication's associate online editor when it folded, tells The Art Newspaper over email.

Austen Tosone, until now an assistant editor at Interview, wrote on Twitter that her six months at the magazine was "certainly a insane ride". It featured Kim Kardashian posing as Jackie Kennedy.

Truman Capote was one of Interview's earliest contributors, and Warhol also conducted many interviews.
