James Mangold to direct 'Star Wars' spin-off about Boba Fett

The Star Wars franchise has experienced a renaissance at the hands of Disney.

Is the world getting exhausted of a galaxy far, far away?

Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jon Favreau.

It's not that, for most of the audience who doesn't pay attention to anything other than the Star Wars movies, Darth Maul was killed in The Phantom Menace (That was undone in a 2012 cartoon). Despite having a helmet over his face, no lines and a very limited screen appearance that ended in his death, the character, with his jet pack and battle-scared armor, grew to cult status. We know it's happening and we know James Mangold's gonna be the one to give it to us, and that's about it.

Solo has been mired in controversy since director team Lord and Miller left early in production, and on the media trail for the film writer Jonathan Kasdan has been sharing how the split was "excruciating".

No details were revealed about the story or timeline, so it's unclear whether the spinoff will take place before or after Boba Fett's demise in the Sarlacc pit. The fabled bounty hunter was one of fans top choices to get his own film, and now it looks like the man who gave us the brilliant and attractive Wolverine send off in Logan, will now tell the story of everyone's favorite bounty hunter (or most people's favorite bounty hunter). Prior to 2012, however, the only ways fans could enjoy new Star Wars stories were through the novels, comics and games from the original Expanded Universe. The Boba Fett project would, of course, be another.

Mangold's involvement is also promising, given that the Oscar-nominated director's last outing was the critically-acclaimed Logan.

The infamous bounty hunter is getting his own standalone movie. It establishes that Jango is the genetic template for the Grand Army of the Republic, who is decapitated in front of his "son" Boba Fett by Jedi Master Mace "Mother Fuckin'" Windu.

Lucasfilm is reported working on movies featuring Star Wars characters, including Obi-Wan Kenobi.

That time might also be valuable for Lucasfilm and Disney to find a way to counter the diminishing returns of its multi-billion-dollar franchise.
