South Korea: Kim Jong Un is OK with 'complete' denuclearization
May 28, 2018, 00:17
Kim Jong-un believes a summit with USA president Donald Trump will be a landmark opportunity to end decades of confrontation, South Korea's president Moon Jae-in said on Sunday following his surprise meeting with the North Korean leader.
Earlier this month, North Korea also released three US citizens―Kim Hak-song, Tony Kim and Kim Dong-chul―who had been detained in the country on charges of espionage and suspicion of "hostile acts".
North Korea's state news agency, KCNA, said the Korean leaders had agreed to "high-level" talks between the two countries on June 1.
But Mr Moon suggested Mr Kim was not certain whether Washington could guarantee the stability of his regime.
Kim is joined by Allison Hooker, a Korea specialist on the National Security Council, and an official from the Defense Department. Pentagon official Randall Schriver is also in Seoul now, the Post said. However, it could not be immediately confirmed whether he was the Pentagon official involved in Sunday's talks.
On Friday, Trump indicated the summit could be salvaged after welcoming a conciliatory statement from North Korea saying it remained open to talks.
Moon's office said that during their two-hour meeting, the two leaders also discussed carrying out the peace commitments they agreed to at their first summit, held at the South Korean side of Panmunjom on April 27, but didn't elaborate.
Moon, however, said that the process of drawing up a roadmap for denuclearization will not be easy.
"It looked like the real Kim Jong Un, but later I realised it's not the real one", said Sagar Admuthe who was visiting from Mumbai, India, after several selfies with the doppleganger against a backdrop of the city's bay.
"The stakes of this summit are big", he said.
Surprised Singaporeans pursued North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday before realising the portly man with slick black hair near the Marina Bay Sands hotel was an impersonator. He said Kim has already made great progress on nuclear and ballistic missile technology.
Mr. Moon said he held Saturday's impromptu meeting, the second summit between the two sides in a month, at Mr. Kim's request.
Trump said "I'd rather not say" whether he has spoken with North Korea's leader. "This will only end like the Libya model ended if Kim Jong Un doesn't make a deal", Pence told Fox News this week. We're talking to them now.
Terry agreed, saying it's going to be a "long way to go before we get to complete, irreversible dismantlement of the North Korea's nuclear program because it is still reversible". He placed enormous stock in the showy demolition at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, an operation viewed by nuclear experts as a theatrical production with limited relevance to permanently ending North Korea's nuclear weapons program, if not a scurrilous exercise in destroying criminal evidence.
Still, it might be able to narrow the gap. "They have a clear pathway forward", he said.
Then Mr. Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a secret meeting Saturday in the demilitarized zone between the two countries.
But the preparations had become increasingly tumultuous as the summit date draws nearer. "A lot of people are working on it".
In addition to the border talks, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said a "pre-advance team" left for Singapore on Sunday morning (local time) to work on logistics for a possible summit.
The fourth quarter's performance showed a deterioration, largely blamed on "unseasonable weather" despite an earlier Easter. That figure dropped by 5.4pc to £580.9m, with the City predicting a steeper fall to £572.6m.
