Starbucks Investors Question Cost of Bias Training, Howard Schultz Says

The chain said all company-operated Starbucks locations would close, while thousands of licensed stores-such as those found at grocery stores, universities, hotels or airports-would likely remain open.

The company has settled privately with the men, and Starbucks has since announced that people can use its restrooms even if they are not buying anything. Starbucks also offered a chance to talk to a few employees that it has selected later int eh day.

According to the company, employees at its stores will undergo training "to address implicit bias, promote conscious inclusion, prevent discrimination and ensure everyone inside a Starbucks store feels safe and welcome".

Trez Pugh owns Sip and Savor and took advantage of Starbucks closing by offering free coffee Tuesday morning, as well as 10% discounts to Starbucks customers this afternoon. He also pointed out that, with such a large company, and with so many employees who may be replaced within the next couple of years, one afternoon won't be "moving the needle" on these issues. One of the men asked to use the bathroom and was told only paying customers could do so.

"Well, I think like many people, it produced that same very familiar sinking feeling and anger, you know, first that the police were called for what was clearly a matter that did not require law enforcement, and then that these men were arrested by the police in that Starbucks". "We need to build up awareness".

"I think that it sends a positive message anyway that they are going to close all of the stores", said Hillary, 40, who did not want her last name published. "It gives me peace of mind knowing I won't be attacked because of the color of my skin", she said. "But we have to start the conversation".

Starbucks executive vice-president for U.S. retail, Rossann Williams, said that the training "isn't a solution, it's a first step".

Ted Weinert, a molecular biologist who studies DNA, said he agrees more diversity training is needed so people understand they are the same. "You can not accomplish that goal with people external to the exercise disrupting these safe spaces", said Dr. Nsenga K. Burton an expert on the intersection of race, class, gender and sexuality and media and chair of Mass Media at Clark Atlanta University. "But they have to be reminded they are not different".
