Loew to decide Neuer's World Cup fate on Sunday

He last played for the national team in October 2016.

Germany's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (C) fails to save the ball during the worldwide friendly footbal match Austria v Germany in Klagenfurt, Austria, on June 2, 2018. "I am not upset about the loss, not upset about losing the game, I am upset about the way we lost it. We didn't execute many things we had planned", Low said.

Germany started brightly and took the lead after kist 11 minutes, with Arsenal's Mesut Ozil capitalising on a poor clearance from goalkeeper Jörg Siebenhandl and producing a fine finish.

"We played decent football at times in the first half, but then we just stopped clicking".

"After the break, we fell into a pattern which I didn't like at all and we were far too sloppy in our game going forward".

Loew has said he will only take Neuer to Russian Federation as his first-choice 'keeper. "We expect him to push himself in the coming days and weeks leading up to the start of the tournament, and we're confident he will manage".

Loew's crowning moment was in holding aloft the 2014 World Cup trophy in Rio de Janeiro.

Mats Hummels and Thomas Mueller, who are rested, are also being left behind in Eppan by Loew, but for the rest of the 27-man squad this is their last chance to win a place on the plane to Russian Federation.

"I learned some important things from the game".

This was Austria's first win over their neighbours in almost 32 years - dating back to October 1986 when Rudi Voeller scored West Germany's only goal in a 4-1 defeat in Vienna.

"It's always fun to win, but it is especially nice against Germany", said Schalke midfielder Schoepf.

Germany will be out to defend their title in Russian Federation and will be one of the favourites to lift the trophy, yet they must guard against complacency.

"But they have some quality players and are still one of the favourites for the title".

Loew has to cut his 27-man squad to 23 by Monday and the match against Austria is Neuer's only chance to prove his fitness before the World Cup finals.

Germany will look to get their preparations back on track when Saudi Arabia travel to Leverkusen on Friday, before starting their bid to retain the World Cup against Group F rivals Mexico on June 17.

"After the break, we couldn't find a structure that deserved to win against Austria", said Nils Petersen.
