Sharapova dumped out by clinical Muguruza

"But on the day I can leave a Grand Slam saying I gave everything I had, I played a great match, is not here yet".

After Angelique Kerber's final backhand bounced out of bounds on Court Suzanne Lenglen, Simona Halep turned to her box and pointed to her head.

"When you're writing an autobiography, I don't think there is any reason to write anything that's not true", said Sharapova after being knocked out of Roland Garros by Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

The Romanian broke at the start of the second set and then held for 6-3 as Kerber dropped her serve again in the ninth game.

Nadal was broken three times and lost the opening set of his quarterfinal Wednesday against 11th-seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina by a score of 6-4.

Halep has only dropped one set en route to the last eight, back at the start of the tournament when she lost the opening set of her first-round clash with American Alison Riske. The victor earns a berth in the final at Roland Garros - plus the No 1 ranking that now belongs to Halep. Halep also won their most recent battle at the Australian Open where she saved match points to win 9-7 in the third set of their semi-final.

An hour and 10 minutes later the 31-year-old was walking off after her worst French Open spanking since she managed only two games against Dominika Cibulkova at the same stage in 2009. The Spaniard won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon past year. I think my shots were a lot more forced. Muguruza won 58 percent of her return points and broke six times in her quarterfinal victory.

Sharapova didn't play a point in the fourth round, because Serena Williams pulled out of their much-anticipated showdown with an injured chest muscle.

Muguruza raced to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Muguruza essentially got that round off, too: Her opponent, Lesia Tsurenko, retired with an injury after only two games.

She has acknowledged having trouble handling her nerves, which is part of why she was so proud about the way she overcame Kerber, a two-time major champion and former No 1.

When the top-seeded Halep and No 3 Muguruza meet Thursday, their contrasting styles will match up with plenty at stake. "If I do that, I will be OK after the match, no matter the result".
