Israeli army kills Palestinian in West Bank during raid

Israeli soldiers shot and killed a 21-year-old Palestinian at close range on Wednesday morning in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh.

"The soldier who was hit by the rock fired towards the Palestinian, who was injured and medically treated by IDF (Israeli army) troops at the scene", the spokesperson said.

Israel Defense Forces investigators say initial findings show that 22-year-old Gazan nurse Razan Ashraf Najjar was not deliberately targeted but rather was inadvertently hit by gunfire during violence at the Gaza-Israel border last week.

During a second, open meeting, Kobi Eliraz, a senior aide to Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, said that Israeli officials are "familiar with the attempt to takeover lands, which is directed by the Palestinian Authority". "In addition, the incident will be examined by the General Staff Fact Finding Assessment Mechanism, and the findings passed to the Military Advocate General", for a separate determination on whether criminal proceedings should be initiated, he added.

Shooting medics is a bit more embarrassing, particularly a photogenic medic like Najjar who was in a lot of media coverage of paramedics risking their lives to treat wounded protesters. Others threw stones or flew kites with burning rags attached, aiming to send them over the border and set Israeli fields on fire.

The mass protests have been aimed at a border blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt in 2007, after the Islamic militant group Hamas overran the territory. "We need real Arab support and solidarity with our cause", said Saleh, a student of Arabic literature who wore a medical mask against the tear gas.

Israel came under withering global criticism over the high number of deaths as its troops faced off along the border, including from allies.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war.

Tensions were further heightened last month after the USA moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a step seen by both Israel and the Palestinians as siding with Israel on the most sensitive issue in the conflict.

Police also detained two other Palestinians, including a youth, from inside the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.
