The meeting follows talks between the Singaporean Prime Minister Lee and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday: a meeting which saw Lee praise Kim's and Trump's "bold and admirable decision" to hold the summit.

USA and North Korean officials are set to meet in Singapore to make final preparations for the summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The series of events that led up to the Singapore summit started in early 2017 when Trump started his maximum pressure campaign on North Korea, rallying the global community to impose strict sanctions on the hermit state.

Trump, who had said the young dictator had a "one-time shot" to bring his country in from the cold with the summit, arrived hours later on Air Force One at Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base.

"It should go fairly well, but people should not expect so much", Rodman told reporters at the airport on Tuesday.

South Korea on Monday began surveying South Koreans who would be willing to meet their war-separated relatives in North Korea for temporary reunions planned between the rivals as reconciliatory steps.

Both Kim and Trump arrived in Singapore earlier on Sunday.

Concerns that the summit would not take place have turned out to be baseless, however, as the primaries have arrived or are set to arrive in Singapore and everything appears to be on or ahead of schedule. "If I think it won't happen, I'm not going to waste my time", he said.

In a report describing Kim's departure from Pyongyang, KCNA said a "changed era" had come about, adding that views on achieving denuclearisation and a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula" would be exchanged at the summit.

The North invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war pitted US-led United Nations troops backing Seoul against Pyongyang's forces which were aided by China.

Earlier in the week, Trump also said he has done little preparation for the meeting, noting that the meeting would be all about "attitude".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe flew to Washington last week to meet with Trump before the G7 to ensure Japan's interests weren't overlooked in the summit.

Trump and Kim are set to meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Singapore, which is 9 p.m. Monday on the U.S. East Coast.

But many say this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and given that the weapons are seen as the major guarantee to his holding onto unchecked power.

Kim smiled broadly in the meeting Sunday evening.

Trump will also meet staff from the United States embassy in Singapore on Monday afternoon, the White House said on Sunday.

Trump's hotel is only 570 meters, or a five-minute walk, away from The St. Regis hotel where Kim is staying.
