Kilauea Volcano Still Erupting; More Than 600 Homes Destroyed

As of June 10, Kilauea's Fissure 8 continued to spew lava up to 180 feet into the air, according to USGS.

An eruption at Kilauea summit jolted the area Wednesday with the force of a 5.4 magnitude natural disaster and hurled an ash plume that reached 10,000 feet above sea level.

A river of molten rock is flowing toward a community that got wiped out last week.

Scientists at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say communities on the south part of the island may be impacted by falling ash. Lava was shooting into the sky from one vent and there was "weak" activity at two other fissures, which weren't producing much of a flow and not advancing very far, Babb said.

A small explosion on the summit of Kilauea volcano has triggered an quake but there are no reports of damage.

Officials warned that gas emissions from Fissure 8 have doubled triggering air quality concerns, according to Hawaii News Now.

Lava flow from Fissue 8 is emitting unsafe gasses, officials say.

The lava's entry into the ocean was also producing laze - a hazardous mix of acidic steam, hydrochloric acid gas and tiny shards of volcanic glass.

Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would carry out an assessment of the number of houses Kilauea destroyed over the coming days, adding the affected buildings could be as many as 700.

The eruption has also had a toll on the area's tourism industry, with many afraid to travel to the island.

The Big Island volcano has been erupting for more than a month, sending lava into neighborhoods from cracks in the ground and destroying hundreds of homes.
