US Open: Phil Mickelson explains weird decision to hit a moving ball

Jun 17, 2018, 00:59

On his 48th birthday, Phil Mickelson endured a testing afternoon in the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Mickelson, who was 4 over through the first 12 holes, saw an 18-foot bogey putt trickle past the hole and on its way to falling off the green.

As he's still on the golf course at the time of this writing, Mickelson hasn't yet spoken on the matter but word from the FOX broadcast is that he took the penalty on objective in protest of the pin placements and the setup in general, a setup that he actually said he enjoyed earlier in the week.

Phil Mickelson let his emotions get the best of him Saturday at the U.S. Open.

A loophole that some will consider against the general ethos of the game, Mickelson confirmed that there were "multiple times he wanted to do it" before today's incident on the 13th.

The 2018 U.S. Open is well underway.

"It's something you might see at your club with your mates".

"I think he just snapped".

Johnson held a four-shot lead over fellow Americans Scott Piercy and Charley Hoffman as he looks to claim a second US Open title in the space of three years. And if that's the way people took it, I apologize to them, but that's not the way it was taken. Then he kept on with his round and parred the most hard hole on the course, the 14th, still smiling and acknowledging fans.

The greens have been a nightmare for the world's best golfers as only one player is under par and numerous game's biggest names failed to make the cut.

He said he knew the ball was going to roll off the green, which is why he made a decision to hit it while it was still moving. "I would gladly take the two shots over continuing that display".

I'm going out on a limb here, but I predict that Mickelson won't win the tournament. "As a result, he incurred a two stroke penalty for a breach of Rule 14-5".
