Sri Lankan Captain Dinesh Chandimal Pleads Not Guilty To Ball Tampering Charge

Sri Lanka's players refused to take the field on the third day of the match in St Lucia on Saturday, delaying the resumption of play for nearly two hours, after the International Cricket Council (ICC) said umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould had changed the ball and awarded West Indies five penalty runs.

The International Cricket Council levelled the charge a day after the Sri Lankan skipper delayed the start of the play on the 3rd day of the 2nd Test.

It appears that the umpires weren't happy with the way the visitors were shining the ball towards the end of the second day's play and that resulted in them changing the ball.

Following tampering claims by the officials in day three, Chandimal held out his team as a form of protest, delaying the game for two hours.

Animated discussions ensued involving match referee Javagal Srinath and the Sri Lankan pair of coach Chandika Hathurusingha and team manager Asanka Gurusinha. Before the first ball could be bowled, though, the Sri Lanka players left the middle of the ground and made their way to the boundary lines.

"The team on the third day of the match protested a decision taken by the umpires citing 'changing the condition of the ball".

The Sri Lankan players were eventually advised by the SLC to take the field.

The article 2.2.9 states: Any action (s) likely to alter the condition of the ball which were not specifically permitted under clause 41.3.2 may be regarded as "unfair".

The hearing will be attended by the match officials as well as members of the Sri Lanka team management.

Opening batsman Cameron Bancroft, the player caught on camera applying sandpaper to the ball, was banned for nine months.

Steve Smith and David Warner were stripped of the captaincy and vice-captaincy respectively and banned from playing worldwide cricket for 12 months.

The visiting team was charged with altering the condition of the ball by the umpires after they reviewed video of the West Indies' first innings on Friday.

That match was the only Test in the game's history to be forfeited after Pakistan refused to return to the field.

The latest ball-tampering fiasco had surfaced on the third day of the ongoing second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka at Gros Islet on Saturday. But fast bowler Lahiru Kumara took the most wickets, four.

Opener Devon Smith fell for 61, having added only eight to his overnight half-century, while wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich followed up his century in the first Test with 55.
