WC FIFA 2018: Sweden wins against South Korea by VAR penalty

Granqvist took full advantage, rolling the ball into the bottom corner to score Sweden's first goal in 402 minutes of worldwide football and secure a crucial three points.

Andreas Granqvist scores a second-half penalty, awarded through the use of VAR, as Sweden grind out a 1-0 win against South Korea in Nizhny Novgorod.

"Because we were going up against a tall team, we wanted to negate some of the disadvantage in set pieces (by starting Kim)", Shin said. "We got the penalty and then we were just fighting until the end". Kim had tripped Claesson, though, and the converted penalty was enough to give Sweden its first World Cup victory since 2006. France and Peru have also benefitted from the technology, though the Peruvians missed their penalty kick.

In World Cup warm-up matches, he switched the numbers of his players around, arguing Swedish scouts would be confused because he says "it's very hard for westerners to distinguish between Asians".

Before Monday's game, South Korea's coach Shin Tae-Yong called it a "must win" game but the defeat leaves his side contemplating only an early exit.

South Korean goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo made an impressive World Cup debut on Monday, although his team fell to Sweden 1-0 in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Group F opener.

It led to a backlash in South Korea while Sweden coach Janne Andersson has tried to play down the row.

The win was reward for Sweden's more attacking approach but it was unsurprising the victor came from the penalty spot in a game between two sides who had struggled for goals in the run-up to the tournament. "The Swedes were so tough to beat in the box".

Jo saved a close-range shot from Marcus Berg midway through the first half, using his right leg to make the block and then jumping back up to punch the ball away with both hands.

He was unable to steer it past Jo in the Korea goal and Shin's team made it to the break on level terms.

It wasn't a flowing performance from Sweden, but securing the win will come as a huge relief to Andersson and his team.

Resilient Sweden held firm after the goal and, apart from the Hwang late scare and a half-hearted South Korea appeal for a penalty, their defence rarely looked troubled.

"I think definitely", Andersson said, "the goalie was their best".

Asked about his thoughts on how his team will fare against Mexico, Shin said, "The ball is round". "Football sometimes goes up and down and we need to accept the result". "It was a good game out there, an honest fight between two good teams".

Some fans were seen wearing uniforms from 2002 as they watched the game on giant displays set up in downtown Seoul. For South Korea, all hopes lie on Son Heung-min - he seemed to be the only player capable of producing a moment of quality in a match that was short on that front.
