Australia, Denmark draw 1-1

Jun 22, 2018, 02:29

Denmark and Australia played in an evenly-fought, intense contest, ending in a 1-1 draw in their second match in Group C at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ in Samara.

That was the last meaningful action of the contest, with both nations having to settle for a share of the spoils which maintains their respective hopes of making it out of Group C and into the knockout stages.

"Everyone in that changing room knows we've got a chance still".

Australia could face being eliminated if they lose to Denmark and France win against Peru later on. If the referee gives a crappy decision against you, you used to always say "you'll get that one back".

With eight minutes remaining, Australia took off Rogic, who had an excellent game, and replaced him with Jackson Irvine, whose first involvement saw him fouled by Sisto with the Denmark man being booked.

With so much on the line, much has been made of just how Australia will look to shackle the creativity of Eriksen, who netted a hat-trick as Denmark beat the Republic of Ireland 5-1 in their qualifying play-off second leg in Dublin.

Danish keeper Kasper Schmeichel had not conceded for 571 minutes, but Jedinak calmly rolled home his penalty in the 38th minute to equalise.

The tournament's youngest player, 19-year-old Daniel Arzani, was introduced in Saturday's defeat for Australia and could start against Denmark.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eriksen, who provided the assist for Yussuf Poulsen's victor, admitted Denmark didn't produce the attacking football that yielded 20 goals in qualifying.

If Australia have a plan in place to deal with Eriksen, who joined Tottenham from Ajax Amsterdam in 2013, then their coach Bert van Marwijk was not letting on in his news conference on Wednesday.

"The goalkeeper will do what he has to, to make him feel bigger than he is", said Jedinak. We just try and do our jobs better.

Denmark began their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory against a Peru side making their first appearance in the competition since 1982.
