Trump Signs Executive Order to Jail Immigrant Families Together, Without Limit

"We need you, those children need you -and I am talking directly to my Republican colleagues- we need you to stand up to President Donald Trump", he said.

Migrant children can not be held with their parents, and are kept in separate facilities maintained by the Department of Health and Human Services.

"In the overall context of this situation, he's not correct", he said.

The former president concluded by saying "we have to do more than say 'this isn't who we are.' We have to prove it - through our policies, our laws, our actions, and our votes".

Faso, who is running unopposed for his second term in a district Trump won in 2016, said the president could take action immediately to end the separations.

The order directs other agencies, including the Pentagon, to take steps to find places to house family units.

It is unclear if any progress was made but White House spokesman Raj Shah said Mr Trump had told the group he would endorse their immigration legislation. Many professionals are anxious about what is happening to the more than 2,300 youngsters who have been separated from their parents by the Trump administration. Melania Trump has had several private conversations with her husband, pushing him to do all he can to keep families at the border intact, whether via a legislative route, or acting alone to stop the process, the official said.

Previously, families who crossed the border were generally held together and brought through immigration court, where they faced civil penalties and subsequently could be deported.

Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., said Trump told lawmakers he "would continue to support the legislation, and that people shouldn't be anxious that he would change his mind". He said the Democrats are outraged over family separation, because they want to return to the harmful "catch and release" policy.

The major change being unveiled Tuesday would loosen rules that now limit the amount of time minors can be held to 20 days, according to a GOP source familiar with the measure. Ted Cruz of Texas that would allow detained families to stay together in custody while expediting their deportation proceedings.

"While cases are pending, families should stay together", tweeted Senator Cruz, who is in an unexpectedly tough re-election battle.

The Trump administration has come under attack by religious leaders, Democrats and Republicans as reports surfaced that more than 2,000 children have been separated from their families since the Department of Homeland Security initiated a "zero tolerance" policy.

The President's decision came a day after he met Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill who fear that their own political prospects with the midterm elections are being damaged by the separation policy.
