Despite also working for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, Alexandria never thought she'd end up in this position.

Last night, the 14th congressional district of NY saw one of the largest surprises in the state's congressional primary history, as a 28-year-old Latina woman, named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, defeated incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, who had previously held his congressional seat for 10 terms. Her policies included abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), medicare for all, free university education, criminal justice reform, and a federal jobs guarantee.

"The future of the Democratic Party is not old, white, conservative, rich men", said Ezra Levin, co-founder of the grassroots progressive group Indivisible, who called Ocasio-Cortez's win the "defining moment" of the election cycle.

"This is the start of a movement", Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted Wednesday morning after defeating 10-term Congressman Joseph Crowley in the House of Representatives.

Holtzman was 31 when she entered Congress, the youngest woman ever elected to the House.

Voters in her district responded by giving her almost 60% of their vote, despite the mainstream news ignoring her and her opponent outspending her 18 to 1.

"I'm an organizer in this community, and I knew living here and being here and seeing and organizing with families here, that it was possible", Ocasio-Cortez after her victory.

Cynthia Nixon, the "Sex and the City" actress who failed to secure the Democratic Party's support for her campaign for governor of New York State last month, said "the progressive revolution has begun".

Ocasio-Cortez identifies both as a Democratic Socialist and a Democrat and says that the two aren't mutually exclusive.

In a campaign video, she said her mother is from Puerto Rico, and father from the South Bronx.

Ocasio-Cortez studied economics and global relations at BU and worked in Sen.

If you didn't know her name before Tuesday, you do now.

Ocasio-Cortez's victory should be seen as a test for Democrats.

"The people closest to the pain should be closest to the power".

Ocasio-Cortez got her first taste of professional politics while working for the late Senator Ted Kennedy on immigration casework and foreign affairs.

Recently, roughly 200 Democratic lawmakers were before a federal judge this month, arguing the hotel and Trump Tower in NY serve as emoluments violations.

"The fundamental thing we saw in New York-14 is, are you responding to your changing community?"

"She is the ideal intersectional candidate", said Nomiki Konst, an adviser to the Sanders-backed progressive group Our Revolution.

"The Trump administration is a threat to everything we stand for here in Queens and the Bronx, and if we don't win back the House this November, we will lose the nation we love", Crowley said. "Women like me aren't supposed to run for office", she said in her campaign ad.

"If there was any doubt that their party has moved drastically to the left, Democrats just elected a self-avowed socialist over the current chair of the House Democratic Caucus", Republican National Committee (RNC) Rapid Response Director Michael Ahrens wrote Tuesday.
