How an Alaska Senator Could Make or Break Trump's Supreme Court Plans

President Donald Trump said he interviewed four Supreme Court candidates on Monday to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, telling reporters he would be making a decision in the coming days.

Trump has said he is focusing on up to seven potential candidates, including two women, to fill the vacancy being left by Kennedy, a swing vote on the nine-member court.

Sources say Collins specifically opposes federal Appeals Court Judge William Pryor, who once called Roe "an abomination".

Trump said he expects to meet with two or three additional candidates, and that an announcement is planned for next Monday.

"I told [Trump] that I was looking for a nominee that would demonstrate a respect for precedent, a long-standing and vital tenet of our judicial system", Collins said Sunday on ABC.

Still, Trump did not rule out the idea that his eventual pick could be instrumental in a future ruling that either reverses or guts Roe v. Wade, leaving it up to states whether to allow abortion.

Sanders stonewalled again later: "Would the President like to see Roe v. Wade overturned?"

Trump's nominee must win Senate confirmation. "These are important moral questions, but you don't take a moral position and then use the criminal law to impose it on people who believe differently", Kaine said.

Collins said she and fellow Republican Sen.

If there is a danger of losing Republican votes, the nominee could prevail by courting Democratic senators seeking re-election this year in states Trump carried in 2016, including Sens.

"During the morning, I interviewed and met with four potential justices of our great Supreme Court", he said.

"And so I would say to my colleagues ... to not just trust that what somebody says to you in a conversation trying to get your vote is what's going to happen when they are on the Supreme Court", Duckworth said.

Democrats won't be able to block Trump's nominee on their own, but could be joined by moderate Republicans who back abortion rights. The majority of American women support common-sense abortion limits, and we deserve judicial representation.

In a series of tweets, Schumer argued that Barrett would support overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision.

Former Justice Department official Tom Dupree said Murkowski's decisionmaking should be handled "delicately" because she is one of the only senators to ever win a seat through a "write-in campaign" rather than being printed on the ballot. Even though McConnell changed Senate rules previous year to allow confirmation by simple majority, if Democrats hold together, he can not afford defections.
