Trump hails progress after receiving note from North Korea's Kim

President Donald Trump on Thursday tweeted a letter to him from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un heralding "epochal progress" in U.S.

South Korea said on Tuesday it has chose to scrap an annual government mobilization drill this year as part of a suspended joint exercise with the United States but will carry out its own drills to maintain readiness. The ministers of safety and defense made the announcement at a media briefing on Tuesday.

President Trump tweeted out the note, dated July 6, on Thursday.

North Korea did not take kindly to the content of Pompeo's visit, which covered what the USA definition of denuclearization is and what would be needed for sanctions relief.

Kim also agreed then to repatriate remains of USA troops who died during the Korean War six decades ago.

North Korea has offered to rearrange the meeting over war remains for Sunday instead, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

"Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!"

"I firmly believe that the strong will, honest efforts and unique approach of myself and Your Excellency Mr President aimed at opening up a new future between the DPRK and the United States will surely come to fruition", Mr Kim wrote, referring to North Korea by its acronym.

North Korean officials did not turn up to a Thursday meeting with the USA military about repatriating the remains of American war dead, according to a US official with knowledge of the situation.

But readers soon pointed out that the letter didn't actually mention any action that had been taken, and only made vague promises about 'the future progress of taking practical actions'.

Speaking afterwards in Tokyo, Pompeo insisted the talks were making progress and were being conducted in "good faith".

The White House had said earlier Pompeo would meet with the leader, but the encounter did not materialise and the top United States diplomat only met with Kim Yong Chol.

The North Korean leader also expressed optimism about a future meeting.

"North Korea would have to deal with the consequences of breaking away from the negotiations if it were to do so, so it will likely not make an extreme decision", Kim said.

Last week, North Korea accused the U.S. of using a "gangster-like" tactics to push it towards nuclear disarmament after a fresh round of high-level talks. In fact, it appears to echo concerns that Trump did nothing more than give up a bunch of concessions without having Kim commit to a hardline stance on dismantling his country's nuclear ambitions.
