The Crown First Look: Olivia Colman Is Queen Elizabeth II

Colman is replacing actor Claire Foy, who played the queen in her younger years, from coronation through the Suez Canal crisis.

Claire Foy has played Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown for two seasons now, but as the show progresses, it has been time to change up the actors.

In the debut photo of Olivia in the prestigious role, she couldn't encapsulate the monarch more, clung on to a china tea cup, with the royal's signature stern gaze. And, since The Crown isn't likely to release episodes from the new season until late 2018, we're definitely going to need some patience!

On landing the role, Colman previously enthused: "I'm so thrilled to be part of The Crown".

It is not yet known how much of the Queen's life she will cover, or who may take over from her should further seasons be confirmed.

"I was utterly gripped watching it, a proper "just one more" feeling", the British actress said, according to Netflix.

Netlix has yet to confirm when season 3 will air, but reports have suggested sometime in 2019.

After months of wondering about the new cast for season 3 of Netflix's The Crown, we finally have our first, tiny glimpse into the latest season of the hit show.

Paul Bettany was earlier in talks to play the role of Prince Philip, but couldn't join the cast reportedly because of his earlier commitment to Marvel. Claire Foy, Vanessa Kirby and Matt Smith have been nominated for their performances as the Queen, Princess Margaret and Prince Phillip, respectively.
