Amazon back up as usual, says sales rise despite Prime Day crashes

"In the early going, you're seeing a lot of deals for Amazon-branded and Alexa-connected products, and the discounts are compelling".

But shoppers were left disappointed in the early hours of the sale, when the e-commerce giant's website and app crashed, reportedly due to the high volume of traffic.

Adobe reports the overall volume for social mentions around Amazon Prime Day was up 6 percent over previous year, with a significant number of comments focused on the dog photos that showed up on Amazon's error page. Amazon said that the prime Day sales in the US continue to be bigger than ever - in fact, in the first 10 hours, Prime Day grew even faster, year-over-year, than the first 10 hours last year. This year, the sales event lasts 36 hours and started at 3 p.m. ET on Monday. The company also said that Prime members worldwide purchased more than 100 million products. Amazon has millions of merchants selling goods on its marketplace, mostly small and medium-businesses that had sales exceeding $1 billion during the promotion, Amazon said in a statement.

Without fail, every Black Friday at least one major retailer will experience a website outage due to the influx of shoppers.

Unlike many other sites, we have chosen not to give too much prominence to Prime Day. That impression may be lasting, and the frustration could prompt some of them to check out competitors' sites during this sale event and on future shopping occasions.

It feels practically necessary for a game like Bayonetta, but could also be especially useful for tricky platformers such as Rayman Legends, which is now on sale for £21.99 during Prime Day too.

Even though the blip won't put a real dent in Amazon's sales, we shouldn't dismiss it as meaningless. But with local Prime Day deals available to Australian shoppers for the first time this year, some wonder whether the event holds the same appeal in Australia as Amazon's home market of the US. In fact, a 55% lift in online sales YoY was recorded during Prime Day among large retailers.

Consumer electronics are of course a staple for Prime Day and this year was no exception. Following closely behind the Fire TV Stick was the Instant Pot and Echo Dot, which is no big surprise. Thousands more Amazon employees in Germany are expected to strike on Tuesday over similar complaints.

Amazon Prime Day is already off to a roaring start, despite a few bumps in the road.
