Cohen lawyer: 'Spin' can't change what's on tape

Late on Sunday night NZ time, Trump took to Twitter, saying "that the government would break into a lawyer's office (early in the morning) - nearly unheard of".

In the brief recording made in September 2016, Cohen can be heard telling Trump that AMI had recently purchased the rights to McDougal's account of a 10-month affair that allegedly took place soon after he married Melania.

In Trump's first direct reaction to a report broken by the New York Times a day earlier, he added in a Twitter post: "The good news is that your favourite President did nothing wrong!"

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani had expressed a similar sentiment when he told the Times that while there was a discussion, the payment was never made and the tape showed that Trump had done nothing wrong.

He also called raids of Cohen's home, office and hotel room earlier this year "inconceivable" and "almost unheard of".

On Saturday, Giuliani told Reuters the conversation was held at Trump's office in Trump Tower and that Cohen used a hidden device to record the conversation.

"Nothing in that conversation suggests that he had any knowledge of it in advance", Giuliani told The Times.

"In the big scheme of things, it's powerful exculpatory evidence", he said. Specifically, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into payments to Karen McDougal, a Playboy model, and Stormy Daniels, the adult film star, to stifle embarrassing news stories ahead of the election. Most states, including NY, allow for recordings of phone conversations with only the consent of one party; other states require all parties to agree to a recording or have mixed laws on the matter. Giuliani said the recording is short-less than two minutes, according to another source - and was simply a professional exchange between a client and his lawyer.

The White House has said Trump denies having sex with Daniels. Fox News has confirmed the details of the tape.

Michael Cohen recorded the conversation with Trump, which was seized by federal agents.

Mr Trump had previously denied all knowledge of the $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels as part of a non-disclosure agreement. "Any attempt at spin can not change what is on the tape", Davis said in a statement on Friday.

Trump, who left Washington on Friday to spend the weekend at his New Jersey golf course, added another chaotic twist to a head-spinning week that began with a widely condemned news conference with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, in Helsinki.

Cohen was one of Donald Trump's most loyal allies, but Cohen still protected himself.

"Obviously, there is an ongoing investigation, and we are sensitive to that", Davis said.

In her lawsuit against AMI, McDougal said she was happy when AMI bought her story in August 2016 but did not publish it, because she was not anxious for publicity before the campaign.

According to CNN, "McDougal signed a contract with American Media Inc., the company that owns the National Enquirer, which barred her from publicly speaking about the alleged affair before the 2016 election".
