Indonesia Invites North Korea's Kim Jong-un to Asian Games

North Korea may want to use the remains' return to keep diplomacy with the United States alive and win a reciprocal U.S. concession. About 7,700 US soldiers are listed as missing from the 1950-53 Korean War, and 5,300 of the remains are believed to still be in North Korea.

The lab will then set about trying to match any American remains with the identities of MIA personnel.

Government officials believe North Korea is continuing to manufacture missiles in a facility near its capital of Pyongyang.

"We look forward to potentially pursuing [remains recovery] operations in North Korea in the future and we're very hopeful", said Rear Admiral Jon Kreitz, the deputy director of Hawaii's military laboratory.

There was only one identification "dog tag" the North Koreans included in the transfer, he said, but it's unclear whether his remains were among the 55 caskets.

The US State Department has said it is committed to building a peace mechanism in place of the armistice when the North denuclearises. "They could go to Australia", he said.

"They are likely to be American remains", he said. There's a whole lot of us. "So, this is an global effort to bring closure for those families", he said.

Some of the sites around North Korea are well known, and their continued use and expansion is an obvious sign that North Korea is not yet making any serious moves to cut back production or deployment of nuclear weapons.

The evidence obtained this month is the latest to suggest ongoing activity in North Korea's nuclear and missile facilities despite talks with the United States and a June summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump. Mr Trump later said North Korea was "no longer a nuclear threat". The DPAA has what it calls family reference samples, including DNA, for more than 90 percent of the missing servicemembers.

Sohae has been the main site for North Korea's satellite launches since 2012. In the past, the North has provided bones that in some cases were not human or that were additional bones of USA servicemen already identified from previously recovered remains.

More than 7,700 USA troops remain unaccounted for from the Korea War. "There's no reason at this point to doubt that they do relate to Korean War losses".

The North Korea flag flutters next to concertina wire at the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia March 9, 2017. But North Korea only provided one dog tag with the 55 boxes it handed over last week. In addition, a series of U.S.

Relations between the USA and North Korea appeared cordial recently, after Kim sent the remains of U.S. troops who died during the Korean War.

The talks were meaningful in "creating understanding" in ways to implement the summit agreement, said Kim Do-gyun, the South's chief negotiator who is in charge of North Korea policy at the ministry.

Only one military dog tag allegedly was provided to US officials last week when North Korea handed over 55 boxes of what it said were the remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean War, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
