Donald Trump condemns racism on anniversary of violent Charlottesville alt-right rally

He was responsible for putting together the Charlottesville rally that led to the death of anti-racism activist Heather Heyer about a year ago. This year, his official account tweeted a condemnation of "all types of racism and acts of violence".

President Trump urges peace for all Americans one year after the deadly incidents in Charlottesville.

Several dozen demonstrators from the so-called "antifa", or anti-fascist, movement marched to the spot where Heather Heyer was killed previous year when a man linked to white supremacist groups rammed his auto into counter-protestors.

Ivanka Trump and her husband reportedly pressured her father to single out white supremacists and neo-Nazis immediately after the violence past year, and he did - and then reversed himself within a day, once again blaming both sides.

Ryan recalled how a group of students and community members faced off against the white supremacists near a statue of Thomas Jefferson on campus, calling it a "remarkable moment of courage and bravery".

The First Daughter's tweet comes just one day ahead of a planned Unite the Right 2 rally in Washington DC that was timed to mark the one-year anniversary of Charlottesville.

The states of emergency will allow state and city agencies to get additional resources, Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement.

In addition, two police officers died in a helicopter crash while they were monitoring the protests.

Clashes at the rally resulted in at least 30 injuries and the death of Heather Heyer, after a vehicle driven by James Alex Fields Jr. plowed into a group of counter-protesters.

Kibiriti Majuto, a coordinator for UVA Students United, said the students moved to another part of campus because they didn't want to be "caged" in the area where the rally had been planned.

"He's not, in my view, a racist by any stretch of the imagination", said Senator Lindsey Graham, (R), who was critical of Trump during the 2016 campaign but has become a staunch ally.

"Instead, he is planning a "white civil rights" event in Washington, D.C., on Sunday".

While the White House will be the backdrop of the rallies, President Donald Trump will not be in town.

Numerous protesters directed their anger at the heavy police presence, with chants like "cops and Klan go hand in hand", a year after police were harshly criticized for their failure to prevent the violence.

"People are welcome into the community, people are invited into the community", she said.

When asked by Cooper whether she had seen any change in Trump's views on what happened in Charlottesville, or on race issues in America, Bro said, "I have other things to do than to worry about what he's doing". Numerous street closures and parking restrictionswill also take effect. Since he began running for president, he has divided Americans by place of birth (native born or not), by religion (demonizing Muslims), by medical condition (mocking a New York Times reporter with disabilities), by region (ignoring or minimizing Puerto Rico's misery), by profession (the press is the enemy of the people) and by expressions of patriotism (if you kneel for the national anthem, you don't love America).
