White House Describes Military 'Space Force,' Aims To Create It By 2020

It would involve defending US space-based military assets like satellites and new technologies from foreign adversaries.

Just hours after Vice President Mike Pence announced at the Pentagon that the target date for establishing the Space Force is sometime in 2020, the Trump-Pence re-election campaign sent out an email soliciting donations from their supporters, asking them to pick a favorite Space Force logo for campaign merchandise.

"It is time to form the United States Space Force".

Shortly after Pence s speech, Trump tweeted: "Space Force all the way!"

Others were a bit more apprehensive about the proposal, and they provided plenty of space-related jokes, including a few Hollywood-inspired quips. The U.S. will meet the emerging threats on this new battlefield, he said, and carry on the cause of liberty and peace into the next great frontier. It would require a new headquarters and major organizational changes. A full Space Force will require a vote in Congress.

A legislative proposal with necessary authorities for the space branch will be filed with the 2020 National Defense Authorization bill, according to DOD's report to Congress. We must have American sovereignty in space, "the Republican mogul said".

However, Mattis has now endorsed steps to reorganize the military's space war fighting forces and create a new command, the AP reports.

The last time a new branch of the military was established was in 1947, when the Army Air Corps was disbanded and the US Air Force was established. The Air Force is now in charge of the US military's space capabilities. "Absolutely? Is a Space Force the best, or second-, or third-best way to do that? No". "We are glad that the Pentagon is finally taking these steps in enhancing our space strength". The command has about 38,000 personnel and operates 185 military satellite systems, including the Global Positioning System and communications and weather satellites.

"There is a threat out there but it's being handled by the US Air Force today". Space Command's main role would be to prepare for conflict in space and to lead USA space forces should such a war begin. There is now no details and no timetable, but the establishment of a new military branch to oversee war fighting in space would require congressional approval.

That said, Congress doesn't appear to share Trump's and Pence's enthusiasm for a Space Force. This group would be the core of an eventual Space Force, to be created as a separate military service.
